Emergency Medical Technician

Course Objective: To provide students with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform emergency medical care in a pre-hospital environment at the basic life support level. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to recognize, assess, and manage medical and trauma signs and symptoms in patients of emergency situations, determine and use appropriate equipment for patient management and care, communicate and work with other emergency service personnel in the care, transport and transfer of patients and maintain patient and department records.

Course Description: Major topics include legal aspects of emergency care, infection control, patient assessment, the respiratory system, oxygen adjuncts and delivery, CPR, AED, bleeding control and management of soft tissue injuries, musculoskeletal injuries and management, spinal immobilization, pediatric and obstetric emergencies, crisis intervention, multiple casualty and triage management, ambulance operations, and EMS systems. Methods of instruction include lecture, classroom and online activities, discussion, and team-focused practical scenarios.

Successful Completion: Students must attend required classroom sessions, complete all assigned online and classroom activities and homework assignments, demonstrate proficiency in the practical skills evolutions and obtain a score of 70% or better on the in-class written and practical examinations.

The student must complete the required internship in the local department to be eligible to take the NREMT written and MIEMSS practical examinations. If the internship is not complete, the student will receive an incomplete evaluation and will not be permitted to test until the internship has been completed. .
