Course Overview: Fire Investigator is an 80-hour course with classroom and practical skills instruction throughout 20 4-hour sessions. This course satisfies the requirements under NFPA 1033, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator, 2022 Edition.

Course Objective: The Fire Investigator course is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to function as entry-level fire investigators. Upon successfully completing this course, the student will be able to apply a standardized approach to investigating fires or explosions in their jurisdictions.

Course Description: Major topics covered in this course include determining the point of origin; burn patterns; evidence collection and analysis; interviewing techniques; and court procedure and testifying. Methods of instruction include lecture, discussion, team-based practical exercises, and a mock-trial exercise.

*This course satisfies the professional certification requirements for Fire Investigator.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course. However, it is recommended that the students be active members of a fire investigation unit.
