Commanding Emergency Management/Preparedness incidents requires an enhanced Emergency Management Command (Both Single and Unified Command) and the Emergency Management Branch Directorís command organization! These command changes are discussed in detail during the simulations. Span of control using branches, division and groups, are detailed. Emergency Management simulations teach the lessons learned from NTSB investigations, NIOSH Reports, Federal Response reports, and prior Emergency Management Commanders and Emergency Management Branch Directorís command experiences. Understanding the enhanced Brief Initial Report (BIR) size up is critical to incident development. This enhanced understanding, addresses issues that have resulted in initiating progressive Emergency Management procedures. These skills are based on research data that includes failure to complete and obtain successful size up information, recognizing how and what resources are needed, and understanding the dynamics of a major Emergency Management incident. Crew resource management on Emergency Management incident and critical decision-making elements are discussed. Understanding Emergency Management Command and Emergency Management Branch Director Presence, along with effective leadership during the initial stages, and during the duration of this type of incident, will contribute drastically to the successful outcome of the Emergency Management incident. Focus is placed on following your organizationís standard operating procedure and compliance with the National Incident Management System (NIMS). From field personnel, specialty disaster teams of all disciplines, to command officers, learning cutting edge technology, critical thinking, and appropriate decision making prepare your personnel for the future.
